Ashford Designer Outlet: The imminent arrival of 50 new brands will showcase £90m expansion

It’s set to open in autumn this year

A huge designer shopping outlet is preparing to unveil its £90 million expansion – and it’s just an hour from Essex.McArthurGlen Ashford Designer Outlet will finally relaunch in autumn this year after first opening in 2000.

The plans will see an extra 50 stores extending the 185,000 sq ft centre by 100,000 sq ft.This means the outlet will have more than 130 stores, restaurants and cafes when work is completed, with the owners claiming it will become “one of the UK’s flagship fashion, food and homeware destinations.”Ashford Designer Outlet is just one hour away from parts of Essex like Grays and Purfleet. It already boasts 70 top brand name stores such as Kurt Geiger, Hugo Boss, Fred Perry, Lacoste and Polo Ralph Lauren.

Planning approval was granted by Ashford Borough Council in September 2015 after the blueprints were unveiled in 2014.This is when Primark’s huge new Bluewater Shopping Centre store will open near Essex,The application saw more than 40 stores banned from moving into the revamped Outlet once it is complete – but it also saw a list of ‘approved retailers’ put forth.A council spokesperson previously told Kent Live: “We want the Designer Outlet Centre and town centre working in a complementary way and providing something that will attract visitors and improve Ashford’s overall offer.

“In order to do so we need these controls in place in respect of restaurants that can open at the Outlet. “It’s important to note that the agreement was negotiated with McArthurGlen and not imposed on them by the council. There is also a mechanism in place to keep the situation under review.“We believe this is one of the first agreements in the country and demonstrates our commitment to ensuring Ashford’s town centre continues to thrive, alongside an expanded Designer Outlet Centre.”
